Blue needle quartz have thin, ghostly “needle-like” blue inclusions that are visible with a gem torch.
These “needles” are not really mineral needles but instead are very fine microscopic voids (tiny tubes of gas or trapped fluid) that formed naturally over millions of years during the crystals growth. What you see as blue is actually light being scattered by those voids/suspended particles - an optical phenomenon known as the Tyndall Effect: shorter (blue) wavelengths are scattered more than longer ones, so when light hits those microscopic lines at just the right angle, the quartz glows with those blue “needles.” Without that precise lighting (angle, strength, darkness), they may remain invisible.
